At the feet of the Mecsek Hills lies Cserkút, a small, picturesque village, and one of the most important centers of ecotourism in the area. It's situated in the Duna-Dráva National Park, and has very special plants and mushrooms growing on the slightly acidic soil, which is formed on the red sandstone, one of the characteristics of the area. Only 5 kilometres away lies the city of Pécs, which was European Cultural Capital in 2010, and its early christian cemetery is UNESCO World Heritage.
Although it lies close to the city, Cserkút is in the heart of unspoilt nature, which makes it an ideal base for exploring the hills, the city's culture, or just relaxing. The BioBia Porta is an ecologic Bed&Breakfast in Cserkút with a holistic world view, and is part of the Ecologic Claster of the Dél-Dunántúl region and the Mecsek Greenway, which includes the most interesting paths in the Mecsek Hills.
The owner speaks English and is part of Ökocsali, a group of green tourism enthusiasts, who have received the Prize for Sustainable Tourism in the region. Our food is made in large part of local products and from natural resources from the woods. We offer unique gastonomic events, like foraging for resources and then cooking it into delicious meals. We also offer tours of the hills and any tour on request. The B&B consists of three separate accomodations: a barn next to the house of the owner in the village of Cserkút with place on mattresses for up to 15 people. The other two accomodations lie close to each other in the woods adjacent to the village, at a 10-15 minutes walk, but we will gladly bring you there by car if needed. The Gingerbread House offers 7 beds, candles as lighting, and an outdoor wood oven.
The Book House offers 4+1 beds, heating the house yourself by stove, and books of course! All three make up basic but comfortable places to sleep, and we'll provide everything to make it as pleasent of a stay as possible. The barn is available at 2500 HUF/person/night and the other two at 2000 HUF/person/night. Kids are 1000 HUF. You can see pictures of the housings under the "Accomodations" tab. We provide transport to and from the railway station of Pécs, but public transport between Pécs and Cserkút is available too.
